Hsu Wei-Hui was born in 1979 in Chungli, Taiwan. She received her BEd degree with a major in Fine Arts from the National Hsinchu University of Education in Taiwan. She went to the US in 2004 and received her MA degree in Painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia. Later on, she received her MFA degree from the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.

Hsu Wei-Hui joined artist-in-residence programs in Seoul, Korea in 2007 and in Vermont, US in 2009. She received a Merit Award from Creative Quarterly Magazine, New York in 2008, and also received Lenore Segan Arts Awards from the Joyce Dutka Arts Foundation, New York. In 2014, her work Smiling Face as a Flower – Resplendent-6 was collected by the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts.

She makes full-scale installations as well as smaller mixed media pieces. Her works have been exhibited at alternative spaces, galleries, and museums in Taiwan, China, Japan, Korea, the US, Canada, Italy and the UK.

Based upon my personal experiences, my artistic practice discusses the issues related to humanity and social values from the perspective as a female artist. Through my works which mostly encourage viewers to question, to challenge, and to reexamine how the fashion culture sets up a standard for the perfect female body and the perfect facial appearance, I attempt to demonstrate the various contradictions and conflicts between an ideal life and the reality. The readymade objects from daily life are used as materials in my artworks, while each of them is given a unique symbolic meaning. Take the facial masks for example: every piece symbolizes human skin as well as the passing of time and the traces of the long-gone youth. The labor-intensive handiwork and the cumulative time help to immerse my emotion and affection in the work bit by bit. Featuring mixed-material and space-installation – in some cases combined with photography and sculpture – my artworks present the examination and the exploration toward the self-consciousness.

Potential Cell No.19 – Fear Wall
My installations speak of contradiction and vulnerability from my life experiences. My sculptures represent the structure of organic form and reveal the link between body and mind. I create a space which seems like my body, my inner world with a boundary between inside and outside. The surface which looks like a lace surface attracts the viewer’s attention and invites one to get close, walk through, be surrounded by the thin walls, and have a dialogue. It simultaneously holds an imaginary spa ...

Camouflage
I was oftentimes teased because my skin was dark like an ugly duckling when I was a child. Such an inferiority sense had been deeply rooted in my thoughts of what about beauty. Can white skin cover up ugliness sophisticatedly? Nowadays, excellent cosmetic technologies can use facial masks to make women’s skin smooth and white. These cosmetic products are also boasted with anti-aging and anti-wrinkling functions. Facial masks have become imperative to women’s face care. Superficially, facial m ...

Bloom
These plain, simple clothes symbolize ordinary yet confident human values. You will see them collectively blooming when you look up, like a refreshing site that is also spectacular at the same time, symbolizing the potential that lies within people. Conflicting values, aesthetical contrasts, and social reflections sparked by fashion culture are enhanced due to the single material and monochromatic color scheme applied to the artwork located at the top of the space. Inside the elevated ...

Guerrilla Girl - Girls War Era
The petite guerrilla girls wear a military uniform with both hands grasping weapons. It means the masculine spirit. The lower body wears a pretty dress with the left hand posing lovely action like grasping the skirt and hand bag. It symbolizes the meek side of a girl. Meanwhile, the girl is also featured with fortitude and softness just like a beautiful girl fighter between the reality and the ideal in our life and the contradiction between tradition and modern with the emotional conflict and ...
