Shi Jin-Hua’s performance art works can be divided into two major categories – pen walking and measuring.

When he performs the action of “pen walking,” each pen and each stroke become the metaphor of human life as well as all what they have experienced. In these works of pen walking, he expresses the void situation we live in and the helplessness when we face the transmigration of life. Sometimes it is represented as an individual ceremony of repentance and inner poise, while sometimes it reveals the inner feelings.

As a patient of type 1 diabetes, Shi Jin-Hua lives a life greatly influenced by blood sugar control. It even becomes the way for him to survive, to know himself, and to know the outer environment. In the beginning, he was forced to measure the level of blood sugar, and he soon got tired of such a rational, objective, and scientific measurement. Therefore, he reversed and challenged the concept by transforming the process of measuring into the reference of different meanings. He uses the body as his tool and medium, adopting various non-traditional ways to take measurement. Through the absurd, non-standard, and non-objective way of measurement, he rebels the oppression of the system and questions the existence of the objective and the Subject.

Just like how carefully he controls his blood sugar every day, Shi Jin-Hua also combines the persistent exercise (walking) with religious practice and art. The same behavior and product can demonstrate different meanings and values as long as we change a perspective and attitude. For him, one action is possible to satisfy multiple purposes, while life and art can exist together.

Shoes Walking Project
Since the June of 2010 till now, I have been working on Shoes Walking Project. The concept of the work is to document the life of a pair of shoes with the help of ATM machines. In the beginning, I bought a new pair of shoes for the project and scanned the soles. I never wore the shoes in any other occasions except for the project. The second step was to open an account at Taiwan Cooperative Bank’s branch in Kaohsiung, on Mintsu Road and deposited 1001 NTD in the account. Meanwhile, I asked a ...

Searching Center and Boundary (Taiwan)
In the work Searching Center and Boundary (Taiwan), I started with the filming of the whole body, continued with the filming of the center and the five ends of the body (navel, head, left hand, right hand, left leg, and right leg), and ended with the filming of the center as well as the five ends of the island (the geographical center, the north end, the east end, the west end, and the south end). I zoomed in the images to search for the central point of my body and the island, the boundary b ...

Body Formula of Elevation - TAV Version
I was curious about the height of the main building of Taipei Artist Village, where I was the resident artist. I came up with the idea that the human body could be used to measure height as well as length. Therefore, I selected three parts of my body as a measure unit to measure the height of Taipei Artist Village’s building. The first was my forearm (making a fist to show a gesture of “cheer”); the second unit was the width between the tips of the index finger and the middle finger (the gest ...

Spitting Johnnie - Civic Boulevard 2nd Section Project
In 2008, I made several measurement-related projects when I was a resident artist at Taipei Artist Village. In one of the project, I measured the length of Civic Boulevard’s 2nd Section which was next to Taipei Artist Village. I chose Johnnie Walker Black Label, a Scotch whisky, as my measure. I held the whisky in my mouth and spat it out. The distance of my spitting was defined as “one spitting Johnnie.” I started to spit at the intersection of Civic Boulevard’s 2nd Section and Chungshan Nor ...
