Born in Tainan in 1978, Hsu Hui-Ching graduated from the Department of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts with an MFA. Her artistic exploration is often based on herself, while artmaking becomes a form of self-exploration featuring physical or chemical transformation as her life experiences interact with the material or the nonmaterial.

Compared to the diverse media and forms of her works, the subject mainly focuses on her life. Therefore, the materials are often developed from the surroundings or the daily objects. Like cooking, her strong curiosity about “materials” encourages her to perceive, learn, experience, and feel the quality of the materials, through which she develops particular “techniques” and “form” based on the different materials.

Since 2000, with an increasing interest in consumerist desire, she has created a series of works about losing weight, including the most well-known work “Step Off, It's My Time” a performance art documentation featuring a 7-day weight-loss plan. The delicious food in the images turns out to be the forced vomit from a risk-taking attempt to lose weight. Following the same concept, her recent working experience in aviation service, which was a twist of her life, inspired her to develop a series of works about traveling – body constantly moving from one place to another – in 2003. Hotel Project’s No.1 to No.5 are the most complete works in the series. 2005, a new opportunity came to Hsu and she became an elementary school teacher who spent most of her time talking. The role as an educator allows her to explore the conflict, question, and introspection of this profession, which provides new elements to her artistic practice. In recent years, she has worked with her students in several art projects.

Up and Down
Every time when I am inside an elevator, I always feel dizzy, suffocated, anxious, and insecure. Sharing the small box with strangers makes it even more awkward. However, for the lazy modern people, an elevator is a smart invention which makes our lives more convenient, saving us the trouble of stairs climbing. It carries strangers from one place to another like a magic box. The work is installed inside the whole elevator, including the simple patterns on the wallpaper such as intertwined ...

I Hate Fat!
I have tried many different body-sculpting methods. Acupuncture, as an ancient-healing treatment I am most familiar with, is one of them. Throughout the treatment process, I have been obsessed with the sore and pain from inserting needles. I allow myself to feel the physical pain and the psychological fear of being pierced while at the same time I cannot help but imagine how subcutaneous fat groans and goes away. The artwork is represented as a provocative torture which is both el ...

Reshaping Pinball
The work is represented as an interactive game for viewers. The main structure is a “pinball machine,” while the background of its base is images of bodies. Nails are fixed on it following the body curves to structure the tracks for marbles to roll down. The three tracks are “ideal figure,” “present form,” and “the body which becomes fat.” The art-making process to nail on the images of different bodies is like an ancient witchcraft, through which I curse my fatness that I will never look ...

Step Off, It's My Time
Step Off! What am I doing now? Do I have nothing else to do? “It's My Time” No! This time I will challenge myself to fight against materials and to examine how sick I am in the aesthetic trend promoted by capitalism. I have realized that I am one of the perfect examples of those kids being nicely educated and socialized, following not only the rules decided by school and teachers but also the popular trends in the world. I like everything the world likes, and when I fail to reach my ...
