Painting

Wu Tung-Lung is one of the few artists who persist in abstract painting in the contemporary art scene of Taiwan. Through his paintings, the artist tends to explore the symbolic presentation of organic shapes and the rhythmic arrangement of geometric lines. He also developed his unique creative style by ingeniously applying various artistic elements such as linearity, color blocks, volumes, and spaces. By virtue of mechanical back-and-forth brushstrokes, he created not only the unique textures radiating an aura of mystery but also dramatic tensions and a sense of volume on the seemingly flimsy surfaces.
Analyzing the contextual development of Wu’s paintings, we may notice that all his works, in whatever series, successfully harmonize not only polarity but also the law of contradiction. He prefers to manipulate pure and minimalist symbols in a rationally checked yet emotionally charged manner. He creates the experience of simple and elegant colors by presenting the diverse levels of monochromatic imprimatura and the infiltration of different hues of cool colors on the canvas processed under established and complex procedures. The elements in Wu’s paintings, be they abstract symbols or a grid of rational lines, commonly reflect his color psyche and multidimensional interpretations on figurative structures. Each perfect and rational composition of the artist’s paintings brims surprisingly with his vigorous pursuit of inner sustenance and connections with the external world.
