Lin Kun-Ying was born in Hualien in 1980 and graduated from the Graduate School of New Media Art, Taipei National University of the Arts. His life is one of the best examples of the concept of hybrid. A classical musician since his childhood, he excels in playing the flute and music theory. He received his training in philosophy in college while he developed a passion in art at the same time. In the graduate school, he began his creative career in technological art. All these experiences interlace with each other and are reflected in his logic, his way of thinking and the development of his career. After many years of creative works, this hybrid background shows an highly individualistic and poetic quality of the artist, which is fully fused into the art pieces he created—simple and pure choices of colors, neat visual structure, philosophical, reflective of his contemplation on nature. Sometimes, there are even characteristic, lively textual descriptions of his works. All these features are highly distinctive. The field-crossing experience helps him to be outstanding when he collaborates with artists from different fields, including dancing, theater and classical music. It also prepares him to integrate his talent in new media art with these different forms art with a sense of perfection. He had individual exhibitions at Etat Lab and Galerie Grand Siècle, and has won the 2008 Taipei Arts Award with his work “Sea-ing and One Hundred Stories of the Sea.” Now he is one of the members of art group “LuxuryLogico”.

Morning NEWS
Video is like the revisualization of humans’ dreams – the material created to capture the dreams in humans’ subconsciousness. Words are no longer free behind or in front of the screen. The independent and undivided scree expresses independent and undivided idea. Those which amaze us with indescribable surprises are good artworks to me. However, I cannot adopt such an absolutely objective perspective to evaluate a work in my dream. Video becomes the re-creation of dreams, but it is deprived of ...

See well
It is an extract from an existing video. The video shows a man entering a haunted house, the kid inside the house receiving a call, and the ghost mom climbing down the stairs. I dub the video by assuming the conversation of the filming crew. Their discussion about the situation at the filming site on walkie-talkie deconstructs the horrible scenes and balances the frightening story. Behind the short horror movie is the combination of multiple boring jobs. I am particularly interested in how th ...

Coincidence
Coincidence is not an easy work for me. It is humorous, but also reveals my fear. Because of my belief in the calculable vacuum, I fear anything of immediacy. For examples, I am afraid of deep water, the sea, water ponds, swimming pools, sea monsters, sunken ships, sharps, and the coldness of the dark. In Luc Besson’s The Big Blue (1988), the main character Jacques dive into the deep blue sea out of an unknown desire of challenge. It is the fear to expect disconnection in the vacuum, where th ...
