Hung Yi believes that it is beautiful to have dreams and to keep hope alive. He has spent his entire life living on the paradise island of Taiwan and holds a deep connection to this land. To make Taiwan more beautiful and more unique is a mission that he has always kept in his heart, which has inspired countless ideas and thoughts in him.

Hung Yi was born in 1970 and is someone who has always had a strong fondness for drawing and painting. He has kept journal entries filled with drawings since he graduated from high school, and somewhere along the way, the experience had grown to become quite insightful and enlightening. His determination and enthusiasm had reached beyond existing circumstances in Taiwan, and he yearned to encounter all kinds of beauty that life could offer. However, society was very stagnant then, with barely any changes taking place; consequently, Hung Yi then spent his younger years running businesses and had operated a total of nine different shops throughout the years. Those were shops that people thought were unconventional; however, those experiences had later helped Hung Yi realize the importance of how a space is perceived, the concept it embodies. He has since kept the vision of integrating art into everyday life for over a decade.

In the year 2000, he stumbled upon the art space, Warehouse No. 20, where he serendipitously took on a residency and inadvertently became recognized by people as an “artist.” However, he couldn’t help but to feel a slight sense of strange helplessness inside. Art should be spontaneous, spiritual, and not intentional or deliberate, he thought.

With the advent of the technology era, culture is rapidly produced in society, with everything unfolding way too fast and hard for people to catch their breath. The contours and features of people’s original spirits are overshadowed, and with society becoming ill, the ecosystem of art also falls unwell. The entire creative environment suddenly feels like a big examination hall, where each creative person is trapped in an institution and required to follow the rules. Where then could art’s freedom and one’s sense of self venture off to? This is why Hung Yi has decided to make art that is unrestricted by form and unbounded by rules. He has dedicated his heart and his mind to this land. He documents his emotions and experiences using his hands and eyes, and has always believed that art isn’t that mighty; greatness lies in the intangible and gradual ways that he brings both visual and heartfelt delight to Taiwan.

Today, that boy who painted out of pure joy has grown to become a practitioner of art.
