Performance Art

River Lin is an artist working across the contexts of visual art, performance and dance.

Through staging situations, choreography, and participation with the artist’s body as live exhibitions, River examines notions of immaterial labour, historical representation, queer culture and social engagement.

His work has been commissioned or presented by institutions as well as artist-run festivals, including the Palais de Tokyo and Centre National de la Danse (Paris), the KANAL Centre Pompidou and KAAI Theatre (Brussels), Live Art Development Agency (London), the Manifesta 11 (Zurich), Buzzcut Festival (Glasgow), Month of Performance Art Berlin, Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival (Chicago), Draw to Perform and Tempting Failure (London), ANTI Contemporary Art Festival (Kuopio), the M+ Museum (Hong Kong), Asia Contemporary Art Week (New York/ Dubai), the Rockbund Art Museum, Ming Contemporary Art Museum and TANK (Shanghai), the 2020 Taiwan Biennial, 2016 Taipei Biennial and Taipei Fine Arts Museum, and the Liveworks Festival (Sydney) among others.

His projects have received grants of Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and National Culture and Arts Foundation, including the artist-in-residence at Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2015. He served as a jury member at the Live Art Prize in Finland in 2017.

River also plays a curatorial role. He has initiated and curated ADAM (Asia Discovers Asia Meeting for Contemporary Performance) with and presented by Taipei Performing Arts Center, to foster artistic exchanges and cross-cultural collaborations across the fields of visual and performing arts in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond.

Born in 1984 in Taiwan, River Lin currently lives and works between Paris and Taipei.

Blue Sunbath
The painting performance Blue Sunbath is based on the site-specific installation Seasonal Depression, a work dedicated to people who suffered from Winter Blues. River Lin takes Blue Sunbath as remaking and transformation of the Seasonal Depression by destroying the work. River Walk
As a working progress of movement research, River Walk discourses the way of “walking”: how the body is moved in the space with the pace and trail during the gesture and kinetic conversion (transformation) resembling the river, which forms a performing painting. River Walk was first performed in the Month of Performance Art -Berlin in 2014 and at ARTPOTHEKE in Brussels in 2014.

Seasonal Depression
This is a site-specific artwork made for Treasure Hill Artist Village. The title ‘Seasonal Depression’ comes from the medical term ’Seasonal Affective Disorder’, a illness referred to being physically and mentally suffered from winter, and this work is dedicated to the patients. Dionysus’ Hangover
Dionysus' Hangover was made for CLOSE TO YOU International Puppet Festival Taipei 2012, curated by Shih Pei-yu, taking place at non-theatrical spaces for presenting experimental puppet performance and object theatre.
