Ku Shang-Ling used to use mixed media and colour ink to create semi figurative and abstract presentation to express the relationship between people for four to five years in her early career. She starts to use clay as her material since 2009. She sees clay purely as a material that can be manipulated via hand building, throwing, slip casting and other methods. She often thinks if there is any other ways of handling and treating clay.

Is acknowledging things by our own experience the only way to understand all the things that we see or sense in our everyday life? KU Shang-Ling appreciates clay via vision, hearing and tactility. The light and thin paper-like presentation of her works triggers a material paradox. She intends to reverse the differences between visual and sense about ceramics in order to carry a thought: the reality and understanding of any thing requires not only rational thinking but also body sensibility.
