The Reading Project
2013
The Reading Project is an exploration of reading as an activity, examining how the image-text-object relationship is interlocked by signifying and being signified. This project assumes the meaning we get from reading is not something in essence, fixed or already exists that delivers to the readers/viewers. But rather, the meanings are produced and practiced by them in the process of decoding. What we read and decode should not be taken as a given, and in fact we organize and produce its signi ...

The Classroom Project
2009-2015
Almost accidentally, as a part-time language teacher, I started to take photos of naughty or bad behaved students during the classes. However, I suddenly realized what I did was aggressive in many ways when I held my camera and pointed at them. Nevertheless, capturing the naughty or bad behaviors by my camera did not show the so-called “truth.” The photographer, me in this case, who believed the photos could tell facts and show evidences, had nothing but my own absurdity. The Bedroom Project
2010-
Being single is in fact the result of a complex set of personal choices and circumstances. The Bedroom Project focuses on the personal space of these PLURAL singles and their diverse ways of life. As a tool to expose, my camera not only resembles a social anthropologist’s viewpoint and approach to the privacy of these individuals, but also explores the relation between the space utilization and his/her lifestyle, and the gap of personal image between the private and the public.

Life / Work in Progress
2011-
This series is developed independently from The Bedroom Project which focuses on personal space of single people. One of my sitter, Tom Hsu, got married a year after I took his portrait in his room. Changes in life always take place. A single then, a family now. I started this long-term project to photograph them, and pay my visit yearly. It is a work in progress of course, and life is a work in progress as well.
