TSAI Shuhui(中文:蔡淑惠), born in 1962 Taipei, completed her BA and MFA in City College of City University of New York in 1992 and 1994 respectively; she was a recipient of Holly T. Popper Scholarship. During her study and travel in New York from 1990 to 1997, she experienced cultural influence brought by art and technology that led her to explore light, electricity, mechanics and kinetics through her creative practice. Fountain, a representation of gender and sexuality, is a kinetic-powered tower built up by hundreds of glass bottles and a water circulation system. Because of this work, she was invited to participate in a group exhibition in The Alternative Museum of New York; Auspicious Cloud, an environmental art installation floating in the air, was awarded the 7th Art Exhibition of Taipei County. After her coming back to Taiwan, TSAI’s practice in kinetic installation extended to transboundary works integrating video and performance with subject centering gender, environment and dialogic interactions with audience. Major works include Heart, The Gestures of Yin & Yang, An Oasis on Oases and Construct, etc. Later on, between 1999 and 2014, she considered her own physical experience as the source of inspiration and created a series of embroidery-cum-mixed-media installation: Rose was exhibited in “Two Sides” at SWAN Day Berlin 2011 in Germany; she held her solo exhibition “The Youth” at Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei in 2014 and part of the works had been toured to 59 rue de rivoli in Paris, France in 2015. To TSAI, every stitch is an expression of her tangled feelings and self reflections in pursuit of a liberation. Adopting a vast choice of medium and material, TSAI’s oeuvres represent a lively characteristic of originality and oriental poeticality expressed in a feministic language of exquisiteness and tenderness. She has received a number of grants from National Culture and Arts Foundation and her works are archived in National Repository of Culture Heritage under the Ministry of Culture and Taiwan Contemporary Art Archives.

"Auspicious Cloud" environmental art project
Venue: the sand-bank between Jong Shing Bridge and Jong Shiaw Bridge, Taipei County, Taiwan. Auspicious Cloud, selected for the 7th Art Exhibition of Taipei County, was my very first work in Taiwan. A cloud sculpted by inflatable synthetic PVC leather was floating above the sandbank along Tamsui river. While it went up, its silvery surface was like a mirror reflecting the surrounding weather and environment. The simplistic form became a pure visual attraction to drivers and pedestrians ...

"Fountain" kinetic installation
Venue: 1997-1998 The Alternative Museum, New York, U.S.A.;1994 Compton Goethal Gallery,1994 Hunter College Art Gallery, New York, U.S.A. This exhibition is sponsored by National Culture and Arts Foundation, Taiwan. Glass bottle was a ready-made object I frequently used for installation when I was studying graduate school in New York. It was then developed into a tower powered by a pump motor so water was pumped to the tower top and circulated down to the bottom. This water flow signifi ...

"The Gestures of Yin & Yang" installation/video/performance
Venue: Tai Nan Cultural Center. This work was made for “Voyage 1998 Art Festival of Taiwan” organized by Dimension Endowment of Art. The exhibition space was slanted in irregular angle where artist friend Yang Chih Fu and I dressed in inflatable costumes and role-played Yin and Yang. Standing at both ends of a round Taichi table, we used elongated ping pong rackets to hit the fertilized-egg-like balloon to each other indicating the tension of the relationships. Before the game of ping ...
