Born in keelung in 1964, Hsi-Te Sung graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in Japan with a Ph.D. He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Sculpture under the College of Fine Arts at National Taiwan University of Arts after spending ten years teaching in the Department of Visual Communication Design at the same university from 2001 through 2010. With a specialization on both design and art, he visualizes the non-everlasting and the everlasting in an expressive style which transforms concepts into techniques.

“Human,” “move,” “environment,” and “field” have always been the major concern in Sung’s artistic perspective and approach, through which he attempts to integrate the cold metal texture of stainless steel with the warmth reflection of color and light refracted through the mirror surface. He thus transforms the non-material elements such as “light,” “power,” and “magnetic force” into a multi-dimensional structure of various possibilities. Apart from kinetic art, his focus in recent years is to combine different textures of steel-cutting treatments and the mirror surface of stainless steel to explore how materials and shapes represent the cultural concepts of “artistic spontaneity & field” in his landscape series.

We have long ignored the original material essence of everything. Sung is willing to delve into the existence of substance based on Eastern philosophy, revealing the essence as well as discovering new aspects in a concrete, straightforward, and humble way. The traces of both the material and the spiritual are well preserved in the world of steel and stainless steel.

Brilliant Life
The inspiration for “Brilliant Life” is to be found in the structure of flowers and the changeable “crossed lines” sculpture. The top part of the work is made of mirror-finished stainless steel that simultaneously reflects images from the surroundings, sky and earth. When contrasted with the red steel structure that forms the lower half of the piece, the work is placed firmly between heaven and earth. Whether seen from a distance or up close it highlights the combination of a “human” shape wi ...

The Supreme Good Is Like Water
The Supreme Good Is Like Water adopts artistic vocabulary derived from the local culture in Ershuei such as cones symbolizing water basket and arcs symbolizing flowing water for their cultural significance. The structure includes a wind power device and three basic units in different heights made of stainless steel, while they are connected by the arc-shaped stainless steel tube. To look at it from the air, its shape is exactly like how “water baskets” are placed in the water – a famous sce ...

Into the Future
Through a combination of location, sculpture, shape, energy of motive force and light, “Into the Future” showcases ideas from the fields of “electric power, environment and science.” After it rotates, subtle changes in light and wind together with a fluid shape transform the work into an appealing wind-powered piece. In addition, the interactive lighting and environment furniture extend outwards into the surrounding space, breathing new life into the site and nighttime atmosphere, creating an ...
