Sculpture

Yun-Hsin Lai, born in Changhua, Taiwan in 1963, graduated from the Department of Sculpture, National Taiwan Academy of Arts in 1986, and then studied undergraduate and graduate schools abroad at the Department of Sculpture, TAMA Art University in Japan from 1993 to 1999. In 1999, he entered doctoral program specializing in sculpture at the Kanazawa College of Art and acquired his Ph.D. in Fine Art in 2002. He lives in New Taipei City and is currently a professor at the Department of Sculpture, National Taiwan University of Arts.

His early creative expression presented specific ideas through carved wooden figures, and he has taken the theme of self-image sculpture and referred to his own self-reflection and review in daily life to explore art creation since 2000. His first self-image sculpture was a realistic self-portrait and later on the faces of his works gradually transformed into flattened modeling. The head and the gate become the constructive features of his series of self-image works. In recent years his works of self-image series have gradually extended to negative space of human figures and modeling of faces covered by hands. He continues to leave records of his explorations of the human essence through his carved wooden creations.
