Pencil Walker is an extension work of Pen Walking. It is a self-repentance ritual to deal with the helpless nihility of the reincarnation of life. The walker sets up a white wood wall and installs a video recorder opposite to the wall. He uses tape to fasten a pencil sharpener to his left arm and a voice recorder to his right arm. A recording microphone which is connected to the voice recorder is also fastened near his mouth. He activates the video recorder and the voice recorder, sharpening a pencil with the pencil sharpener around his arm. He walks to and fro in front of the white wall as he continuously draws a line with his pencil. Meanwhile, the walker chants the Hua Yen Confession Sutras: “for all the evil deeds I have committed in the past, created by my body, mouth, and mind, from beginningless greed, anger, and delusion, I now know shame and repent them all” to start the work. He walks as he draws the line, chanting sutras, incantations, or names of the buddhas/bodhisattvas. The whole process is repeated until it completes the two-hour-and-fifteen-minute work. So far, Pencil Walker has been performed 54 times in more than 15 years.
