WU Chien Hsing‘s recent works illustrate a journey of self-searching. His father was a skilled automobile mechanic, but unable to withstand the transformation of the modern car industry. The car repair business he runs faces the danger of marginalisation. Wu’s previous work “Black Hand” adopts the car repair depot as its main setting, while “Iron Sky” renders a sofa installation transformed from a broken vehicle via traditional car repair techniques. In his new piece “Iron Wood,” Wu shifts our attention to the metaphors illustrated in daily objects and aims at engraving personal memories through them. He first began by collecting deforested trees off the streets and all types of iron tools that we are exposed to in daily life. By cutting, restructuring and deviating these objects from their practical functions, the transformations they undergo render the dynamic tensions produced during the maker’s sculpting process. The utilized materials, iron and wood, are analogous to those used in manual tools, which also reflect his memories of the environment he grew up in
