After the revision of 2013 Kaohsiung Award, Knowledge Reading Gesture of Asia has become a various project of series works, which present the states of artists under different context of hegemonic, by projecting the sentences all begin with “If You Want To Be An Artist,………“.
Knowledge Reading Gesture of Asia‐ Beijing is my latest work, which is showing at The Central Academy of Fine Arts (CAFA) in Beijing, China. The sentence is showing in both English and Chinese, but in different shape of images. The square one is with English “If You Want To Be An Artist, You Must Do Art For All People!”and the round one is with Chinese「如果你想成為藝術家,你必須要為人民服務!」play for 60 seconds each and repeat.
This work is inspired by all kinds of political slogans in Beijing. When we look back to the history of Chinese realist art, and think about the spirits of that time. Through the paradoxical series of art slogans, the artist inquires that, contemporary art in globalized world today, “What is the purpose of an artist doing their arts?”, “Should there be some specific target masses or audience for artworks? “, “What kind of art is for ordinary people?”, and “Does there exist a kind of art is for all mankind?”
Note: The art exchange exhibition I attend is coincidence happening with two special exhibitions, which are Andy Warhol and Beuys exhibitions showing in Central Academy of Fine Art Museum. The sentence of my work can be also considered as my response to the concepts of "Pop Art" and "Social Sculpture".
