I was oftentimes teased because my skin was dark like an ugly duckling when I was a child. Such an inferiority sense had been deeply rooted in my thoughts of what about beauty. Can white skin cover up ugliness sophisticatedly? Nowadays, excellent cosmetic technologies can use facial masks to make women’s skin smooth and white. These cosmetic products are also boasted with anti-aging and anti-wrinkling functions. Facial masks have become imperative to women’s face care. Superficially, facial masks act just like a stuff with facial anti-aging functions. Actually, facial masks reflect the fear internal to women’s hearts.

When facial masks become the media for my art creation, it means the representation of my very personal life experience. It is also used to explore the universally discussed issues about time and life. Meanwhile, it also symbolizes the contradiction and fragility of life and the dark side of humanity. Deliberately, I use hundreds of or even thousands of facial masks to form the facial expressions with frown, scream, anxiety and pain. And then, they are further linked and used to metaphor the fear and struggle deeply hidden in my heart. On the glimpse of hardened facial masks, they look like soft laces, but actually, it is used to metaphor negative emotion personally. Pain and worry are also hidden behind the beautiful appearance.

As a saying runs, “There is always a suit of clothes less in women’s wardrobe.” I always wonder whether the appearance does really matter as a woman. Do women really need luxurious clothes, high-heeled shoes and bags to decorate themselves?

I use facial masks to construct the dresses, high-heeled shoes and bags in a real size. Numerous pieces of feared faces imply my anxiety to women’s appearance. By means of photography and behavioral performance, it aims to record the conscious or unconscious dialogues of my body to the scriptures made of face masks. Also, they are used to ironically unveil the camouflage and disguise decorated by the dresses, high-heeled shoes and bags to decorate women’s appearance. Also, in the perspectives of both women and men, I try to shoot the scriptures made of facial masks. I cast my doubt on the transient endurance of these fragile and skin-deep appearances.
