I decided to carry on with this project even with the faint impression that I had for the Yancheng District.
The way I recall it Yancheng has always been a place of arduous labor and grueling sweat. In fact, these were the only two notable things of the area.
Rather than comparing it to Baudelaire’s The Flaneur in the City, this is more like the classic Snake game, with me running through one street after another. The map of Yancheng is divided into sections according to top, bottom, left, and right. The plan is to run through the streets indicated on the map, which are roughly around twenty streets.
Dressed in t-shirt with a wine glass in my left hand, I begin to run through the streets indicated on the map, while using the wine glass to collect as much sweat as possible from my body during the run.
After collecting the labor exerted from running through these twenty something streets, the sweat collected is than dried to try to extract salt. This is another imaginative way to look at Yancheng (literally, Salt City, named after the salt harvest fields that surround the city), with me trying to harvest salt from my body, salt produced from running through Yancheng District.
Perhaps this is a way to connect with a city and its everyday sceneries that I don’t belong in.
