My job as a flight attendant began in 2002 with an unknown desire to get away. During the two years of my service, I was given free flights to travel to other countries, and it was almost like I was given wings to fly toward my dream. Hotel Project is a series of works inspired by my recent life experiences. It is a visual documentation of my work, life, and art. Through the visual documentation and representation of the space concept, I try to explore the things like “where am I?” or “the relation between time and I.” For example, this work is two-dimensional images of the two hotel rooms in 360 degree.

The images of the clean hotel room in Hotel Project I: THE METROPOLE HOTEL shows my first encounter with room. It was a hotel in downtown Phuket, Thailand. After the last guests checked out, the room was carefully cleaned and tidied by hotel cleaners, waiting for its next guests. When my body arrived at the space in the foreign country, I became its temporary owner. As I breathed in the foreign but yet familiar air, I started to imagine its stories. Who had lived here? What had happened here? In a space which looked simple but yet complicated, had I become part of it?
The hotel room’ images in Hotel Project I:VILLA HOTEL belong to the second stage of my visual documentation. It shows two images of me as well as a messy scene suggesting the room was taken by someone. It was a hotel in San Francisco, USA. When my body entered the space, I put down all my defense psychologically and physically. I brought my own “air” into the room which should be my temporary home, immersing it with my habits until it was no longer “neutral” and finally became a space for me. In the work, my baggage is unpacked and my personal belongings are everywhere for my convenience. The bed looks messy, the television is turned on even though no one is really watching it, the desk is under piles of things, and shoes are scattered on the carpet. When taking a closer look into the two-dimensional image, the chips, diet coke, and lemonade give us a clear image of what local food is like. In one image, I am in pajamas, getting out of shower, without makeup, and setting air-conditioner to have a good sleep. In the other image, I look more relaxed, getting ready for a city tour to take a look at America after a long flight. A small room is filled with my smell, the traces of my life, and my real existence. It is a personal documentation of the space and me, a journal of my small-world journey.
