The series "Muchi & Painting" starts with the relationship between painting and the painter, as the title implies. In this work, the artist found collaborators to complete his unfinished paintings and made a video about this production process. By way of branding, the painter’s hand is transformed into an action in which what cannot be shared in painting is shared. Just like the advertising slogan "You will watch in peace, buy at ease", the work eliminates the personal in the production of painting and instead makes use of a platform for collaboration with others. The video turns the artist into a performer of variety show, and using the MV styles proclaims how painting brings happiness and creates values. Portraying and endorsing the self-branding of painting, the video aims to generate in media a brand image of Muchi making painting, indicating not only the partnership between the author and his collaborators, but also how the value of painting is manufactured and assured in the exterior system such as galleries, museums, art academies etc.. Moreover, the paintings finished through the collaboration between the artist and others implies a switching between different creative subjects, thereby reducing the author-centered subjectivity of the artist himself. This work goes beyond the issue of the painting and its content, and focuses on other exterior issues such as OEM, collaboration and commodification in the global production system, to explore how the value of painting is produced and manipulated nowadays. The work also incorporates the element of self-reference in its interaction with these external contexts.
