Feeling motivated, I headed over to install the exhibition at Sinpin Pier Art Space a few days before the exhibition opening. Perhaps it was because of the ambiance at the exhibition venue, I was seeing other people’s artworks coming in, and although I was still unclear on how I would present my work, I was still quite conscious of the sense of motivation in me, and it was growing more and more prominent. The drive in me prompted me to decide to spend the night at the exhibition venue that day. Although it wasn’t the first time for me to stay overnight in an exhibition venue, for a while, when I feel like I lack motivation or can’t come up with any ideas, I’ve developed the habit of staying in a particular location and space out, or just be there aimlessly for a while. I didn’t do anything specifically that night, but I did choose a wall that day late at night. I decided to unreservedly release the drive inside me and to start scribbling in that space.
I returned back to the space the next day with a few boxes of charcoals. I then began my next step, which was to start covering the wall with charcoal. I didn’t put too much thought into the action, as I just let the impulse in me run wild. However, I did try to limit the visual aspect of it, and for the act of scribbling to be simplified into repetitive gestures.
