Site:Art 100 Studio, Taiwan.

After my 2011 TFAM: Taipei Flat Arts Museum and 2012 Truly False Arts Museum, Taipei’s former Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner, Hsieh Hsiao-Yun, who was forced to step down from office, filed a lawsuit of defamation against me and Wu Mu-Ching. It has been over a year since the premier of this artwork in January 2012 (this statement was written in August, 2013, and the lawsuit is still ongoing, and is expected to proceed for another six months).

The artwork is an irony of Hsieh’s abuse of the judicial system to persecute us, and our helplessness for being forced under the situation of being bullied by those in power through the unnecessarily just justice system.

Thirteen subpoenas are pasted around a table placed on the site of the performance in advance, with me not present initially. Prerecorded oral narrations of the 13 subpoenas are first played on location (the narration is 7 minutes long, and two minutes after the conclusion of the recording, I enter on stage from behind the curtains). I begin to loudly recite from the book on the desk titled Don’t Let the Law Mess With You, which includes laws that apply to both parties in this case. As I read the laws out loud, my voice is overlapped with the sound recording of the subpoenas. After reciting for 5 minutes, I then begin to eat the subpoenas pasted around the desk, eating and reading all at once. My recitation of the law grows increasingly more slurred as more subpoenas are stuffed in my mouth, until I couldn’t put anymore in my mouth after having stuffed 7.5 subpoenas in there. The sound recording of the subpoenas playing in the background then comes to an end, and I am left trying to clearly read the laws with my mouth stuffed with subpoenas. Eventually, my mouth freezes, with my voice muddled. I then spit out the chewed up subpoenas that are now mixed with spit and blood onto the book. I close the book, Don’t Let the Law Mess With You, and leave, concluding the performance.
