It is inspired by a plant native to Australia, the grass tree. I was attracted by the slow growth of grass trees, their spectacular figures and the ways in which their existence connects the land, the plant and the human. The official name of the grass tree is Xanthorrhoea preissii, people also call it Balga. It is neither a grass nor a tree. The pithy flesh inside the trunk is known as a replenishing source of food and water. Resin from the trunk was used as an adhesive for aboriginal tools and other materials. The growth of the grass tree is controlled by the seasons and resin is often produced after the plant is burnt during the hot months of the year. This video is a visual documentation of and reflection on my experience of and connection with the Grasstree.
