The series of works was shot on the fringe of cities in Taiwan, mostly when night falls. It is also a private record of wandering at the border of my sensory recognition.
In my creative process over years, I first learnt how to listen, then how to look.
The difference between the two sensory experience is that looking is more limited by one’s own intention. We only see what we want to see, and follow what we can see.
But one can’t escape from listening. The only thing one can do is just unconditioned acceptance. This attitude continues to influence my way of looking. To feel without intention. Be open to the unexpected. And beauty may lie within this confusion.
This experience is somewhat similar to repetitively writing of a chinese character. At a certain moment, you suddenly feel this character is so unfamiliar. It is the interruption of meaning, the split between signifier and signified, the tangle between concrete and abstract.
I savour this confusion in the dark. When sounds are heard from within, I click the shutter.
