We are often forced to maneuver between a small crack and focus on carefully coordinating our advancement; we often feel mentally exhausted and need rest, yet we often unconsciously look to stimulation as a way to relax. The human is mysterious; once a person adapts to maneuvering in the crack, he moves with ease; once a person acclimates to relaxing through stimulation, the depletion of stamina becomes a source of energy. Thus, understanding humans is like strolling in the clouds. After his 1996 solo exhibition at Taipei Fine Arts Museum, the artist will exhibit his 1997 new work Strolling in the Clouds at Shin Leh Yuan Art Space in Taipei. This work continues his artistic style, utilizing contrasting situations to interpret the nuanced condition between the human living space and inner psychology. The artist transforms the third floor exhibition space of Shin Leh Yuan Art Space into an odd mini-club, presenting the comical and odd aspects of modern city life. He utilizes an indoor pool (bath tub) and a human sculpture walking on a tightwire to express his position. The third floor exhibition space is transformed into a pool almost as big as the room. On top of the pool, a sculpture of the upper body of a human connected to a unicycle, carrying a balancing pole, stands upright on a metal pipe that spans two opposing walls. However, upon closer inspection, this human unicycle isn't really balanced by itself, but rather relying on a parachute like strap to dangle on the pipe. Through this, the artist attempts to present a kind of cheeky sentiment of courage. Additionally, the pool that takes up most of the floor space only leaves a foot-wide gap between the walls. The audience faces the dilemma of whether to stay at the edge of the stairs leading up to this room, to walk carefully in the space along the wall, or on the rim of the pool (the pool is smeared with Vaseline), forming an interesting contrast with the unicycle human.
