I installed a small, cylindrical wooden house in Bamboo Curtain Studio. In the bottom of the wooden house, there is a metal grate that one can walk on and there are fans underneath the metal grate. There are many balloons inside the wooden house, some containing prize tokens or slips similar to those in fortune cookies. When the audience enters the wooden house, a sensor activates the fan and the speaker; the audience then mingles in the breeze, balloons, and hit music, then chooses a balloon and leaves. The audience might get a slip or prize token, but they can only redeem the prize at another time. When the audience comes back to redeem, the prizes have physical packages but turns out to be something one cannot really own or inspect (such as the prize "rainbow magic ball," which is a soap bubble blown by the artist). In this project, on the surface, amusement is a central point. At the Bamboo Curtain Studio, most of the audience are friends within the art world. Almost like the past phenomenon of going to the market (back when markets only happen once in a while), the biggest reason for driving the audience to the studio is that the audience has an ideal in which they wish to come see another dream come true. Thus, I hope that people can relax while viewing the exhibition and at least have some fun. This almost promotion-like event clearly have links to the essence of local economics, politics, and social habits. Everyone is like the balloons of the project, filled with some kind of desire and amusing each other while brushing up against each other. This makes it easier for us to imagine life as filled with energy and dreams, despite everyone knowing the reality.
