“Glory” emanates from self-identification—in most cases. A new phenomenon in Taiwan is that an abundance of the phrase “the glory of Taiwan” can be seen or heard in the news, referring to a Taiwanese person whose achievement is noticed or recognized on an international level. This glory built on extrinsic approval is like a shadow. When the radiance of glory fades out, only a glimmer of light can be seen in the dark.
