In this video, I pieced together classical images and footages gathered from historical and online resources to create a personal, fictional narrative of Taiwan's colonial history. Through this collage-like historical narrative, I attempted to convey a message: history was an illusion created through an amalgamation of knowledge fragments. Additionally, the artwork was a metaphor for the relationship between knowledge and power. The video began with Foucault sitting and pondering on deep thoughts on a meadow. Then, innocent looking boys and girls, who were commonly featured in textbooks issued by the National Institute for Compilation and Translations in Taiwan, appeared and ventured together through a forest. Until this point in the video, the narrative still unfolded according to the context of historical development through previously held ideas and perceptions. However, the boys and girls then encountered a military transport vehicle in the end (the military vehicle from Huang Jung-Tsan’s print work, "The Terrible Inspection"), and were killed in the crossfire of a gun battle. The removal of this past incident (referring to the 228 Incident in Taiwan) from mainstream publications and knowledge (by the National Institute for Compilation and Translations) formed the climax of this video.
