29 Private Letters / QR Code / 29 Facebook messages / donzen.net

In the winter of 2012, I purchased a large pile of private international letters at the Fuhe Bridge Flea Market. This pile of private letters were written by a man named Lai Dong Zheng to his then girlfriend (now wife), from 1979 to 1988, spanning a decade. Lai Dong Zheng was a sailor who worked on the near-sea shipping route, operating a large cargo steamer around Asia, Africa, and other areas. Throughout his time at sea, he often wrote to his wife to maintain their relationship that was separated by sea.
Not only do these letters record the young and inexperienced emotions of the couple, they also illus- trate the ambiance of a certain time — the things people pondered thirty years ago, the way they com- municated, the details surrounding them and the changes in time over the past decade. All this outlines the backdrop of a time in which these letters, that maintained the relationship, were written. Like a movie script, these words form a boundless world. This is a real past, yet the scenes constructed be- tween the lines are virtual experiences, much different from that of movies and novels. In turn, this, on some level, has stimulated my desire to interfere with this third person experience, this era I missed.
By replying to the letters written by Lai Dong Zheng, I interfere with this experience from which I was absent. Today, thirty years later, with the convenience of the modern Internet and online social networks I found his present self. I posted the contents of the replied letters on his Facebook wall to his previous self. This correspondence, misplaced in time, involves the past/the present, reality/virtuality, memory/ script. I wish to sew the past and the present into one complete narrative. Also, in the work, I wish to reveal the shift in ways people communicate with the changing times, and, furthermore to divulge the intention to peek as well as expose personal information and the anxiety concerning safety and privacy. In this work that I hope to create, I wish to extend what I am concerned with — some reinterpretation of a narrative. That is to say, to reverberate between the real experiences of others and the virtual ones of mine, the original stories of someone, something, some object. That unfamiliar something is forever my reality. Through the process of creation, I record anew and reconstruct this something, making it a truth that is an exception within the real past.
