Six years ago, I bought a 1981 public aquarium annual report at the ROC Flea Market. About 800 pages long, the report is peppered with handwritten memos and jottings in the gaps and spaces among the numerous charts, lists and laws. These notes describe the activities, collections and nitty-gritty work in the aquarium. Following the descriptions in the report, I travelled again and again through the long flight of stairs at the entrance and entered the aquarium that I am familiar with since childhood. Peeling palace decor, huge specimens immersed in chemicals, dark corridors and loud echoes of footsteps--even after all these years, I can sense the fear and loneliness that I felt there when I was a child. Through this article, I painstaking re-examined the root of these feelings. Since 2017, I have begun to rewrite the Annual Report in the form of short novels. The two Chinese palace style buildings similar to each other surrounding the aquarium which convey the life, politics, objects, places, art, events and writers hidden in history. Seemingly parallel and independent, they infiltrate, overlap and construe each other through the memories of people, and to this day continue to look for mutual similarities.
