The original idea of Do You Good series was inspired by a road trip in Taiwan in the winter of 2013, after leaving Taroko National Park, on the mountain route up north, we stopped over at a 2374-meter height youth hostel named Guan Yun Youth Activity Center. It was during a cold spell in the winter, so the whole hostel was empty and no tourists around except us. While I walked into the main hall I saw all the chairs were stacked high up against the wall, and every single chair leg was wearing a tennis ball. The bright neon green colour of the tennis ball was contrasted with the cold and grey Terrazzo floor.

A tennis ball on the chair leg is really common in Taiwanese’s modern daily life; people normally use it to keep chairs from scratching the wooden floor. Why tennis ball? Tennis is not a common sport in Taiwan. Because Taiwanese love the idea of being “safe” or try our best to protect something really well in order to make us feel comfortable. And it doesn’t really matter how good it looks, nor how much sense it makes.

I decided to use this inspiration in my work “Do you good”, a way of protection, a way of over protecting things I care about, no matter if it makes any sense, just like the tennis ball protecting the chair from the Terrazzo stone floor.
