Born in 1961, Yeh Tzu-Chi grew up in Taipei and moved to Tainan in 1987. With master degree of western literature, she had once been an editor of a literary magazine, a full time English lecturer in college, as well as a freelance translator and writer. When preparing to write and direct a small-scaled theatrical piece in 1999, she came across performance art by reading and got a brand new perspective of it. She started her performance art career since 2002 when she joined a performance art workshop by Seiji Shimoda. Since then, she has joined quite a few live performance festivals in Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Philippine, China, Myanmar, Thailand, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Finland, Israel, Croatia, and United States. She founded ArTrend Performance Group in 2003, and has organized some local or international performance art events, including 2004 Taiwan Asia Performance Art Meeting, On The Way: 2009 ArTrend International Performance Art Meeting, and A(rt) Nest of Nuts Group Performance, for each of which she has published the afterward documentary catalogues.

Rhino
Zoo is a prison to animals. Only crawling nakedly with the rhino can I show my sympathy, sorry, and sense of guilt to the animals in zoo.

Hands Up
It’s a public art. The will and execution of the audience become the major part of this performance. It’s like smearing the mouth with blood and swearing fidelity to a certain group. At first, one feels the sense of belonging and safety, or even the high spirit to join some kind of revolution. But in the end, one cannot but suffer from loss of freedom. Perhaps all the movements in the history are like that.

Wind Sonata
It’s a performance by Nature: wind, dry leaves, sunlight, time, and earth. It’s not only a sonata but also a sculpture by Nature. How beautiful the Nature is! Yet, I also come across another Nature. After lying in the leaves for a long time, I couldn’t stand up right away because I was dizzy, numb, and afraid of light, which reminds me those who were buried under rubbles, mud, or fallen buildings… It’s the terrible Nature. How fragile life is. In Nature, it’s easy to live, and to die.

Meditation on Red
In an old tea house where people try to keep an old style of living, I quietly play with red yarn in my hands and walk along the classic winding passageway like a spirit and a poem.
