Chi Kai-Yuan (b. 1983) was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and received a Master of Arts at the National Changhua University of Education. Chi’s work concerns space, objects, and mass public. In daily situations, these things are the vibes to inspire creativity, which Chi sees as targets, and get close to them through various techniques at different distances, including linguistic exchange, site-specific production, event actions, critical discourse as well as other artistic methods to interpret.

In other words, this means Chi’s works tend to produce different appearances and forms due to the differences in targets he cope with, which Chi refer to this state as the term “mutation.” Mutation is disconnected change within a short period of time, and has strange forms of growth and capability of sensing, in which there must be internal conflict and technical adjustment. In these differences and changes, Chi develops ways of flowing / deconstructing / dispersing in his artistic approaches. He has participated in artist residencies at Bamboo Curtain Studio (Taiwan, 2012), Treasure Hill Artist Village (Taipei, 2013), Pier-2 Art Center (Kaohsiung, 2014), and 18th Street Arts Center (Los Angeles, 2015). In 2014, Chi won the First Prize of Taipei Arts Award and is recently awarded by Asian Cultural Council (ACC) for the residency program in New York in 2016.

The issue of archive excavation and historical writing has become prominent in the contemporary art domain of East Asia and South East Asia. On the one hand, this reveals the collective change and reconfiguration of the power tectonic plates of Asia geography-politics since the post-Cold War to the present. We can see this through the establishment and rival relationships regarding the canon culture of Asia and rights to cultural discourse between several mega government art institutions. On ...

HOWL STORE Contemporary furniture store
If the techniques of site-specificity can be used for establishing a local store, then HOWL STORE is the realization of this technique. For fixed elements, I flipped the identity of HOWL Space and returned it to an everyday appearance-back into a store. At the same time, I respond to the fundamental problems that alternative spaces face. For non-fixed elements, I chose contemporary objects that occupy the middle of two definitions (art/design and furniture/sculpture) to weave an urban thread ...

Blooming without Reasons
Treasure hill is a multi-layered, labyrinthine settlement, in continual and symbiotic evolution with its location. Its irregular polygonal surfaces appear extremely illogical, yet each one is situated, divided and configured in exactly the right position. This presents a stable structure, composed by dynamic counterbalancing, and interconnected elements. As you look at every incline, every step, platform, lawn and garret, you see strange angles, lengths, breadths, heights and surfaces ...

Exercise Trilogy
Exercise Trilogy was made at the scene at Treasure Hill Artist Village in Taipei, Crane Gallery in Kaohsiung, and Five Piers in Tainan respectively. By exercising in new ways (badminton, table tennis, Hula loop) in space of different quality, the artist observed how a body develops new means to cope with space and objects that seems familiar yet strange. Especially when a body starts exercising, a body has no choice but swift from original moving mode according to the space and the objects. A ...
