Wen-Fu Yu was born in 1968 in Douliu, Yunlin, after which his parents migrated to Zhushan, Nantou. Because his family works in the bamboo craft industry, he has been immersed in traditional handcrafts since his youth and holds great interest in arts such as painting, calligraphy, and epigraphy. During his teenage years, because of the difficult financial situation at home, he attended military school to help his family with income. After graduating from the air force, he began his aspirational, admired career as an air force pilot protecting his country. But the career in the military didn't erase his urge to create and yearning for art that has been developing since his youth. Rather, this urged him to retire from the military after nine years of service to fully commit to art practice that he previously could only learn on his own in his spare time from work.
In 2001, the Ministry of Culture promoted a Railroad Arts Network Project. Wen-Fu Yu, with his unique experience as a retired pilot and his proposal using feathers as a medium, was chosen as the first group of artists in residence at Stock 20 and since then begin his new life as a professional artist. For 15 years, Wen-Fu Yu has flexibility incorporated the two natural materials, feathers and bamboo, to create many unique artworks with his personal style in the form of 2D, 3D, spatial installations, environment art, and landscape art. Besides independently practicing, in the past years, he has also been invited create work on-site at many local and international locations, including the Peng-hu International Earth Art Festival, Kuan Du Flower Arts Festival, Taipei International Flora Exposition, and Jing-Mei Human Rights Memorial and Cultural Park in Taiwan, Headlands Center for the Arts in California, International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York City, United States of America, Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, France, and King Island Culture Centre and Salamaca Arts Centre in Australia.
