New Taipei Gallery is located on the third floor of the Kuo Ting Building, which was built 12 years ago and stands twenty-eight floors high. The price of this building averages at around NT$663,000 per ping, making it landmark architecture in the Xinban Special District. Taking advantage of the floor-area feedback scheme, the builders transformed this area into a gallery, to serve as multi-functional recreation and exhibition space.

The project “If - Ting-Tong Chang’s Automatic Theatre” echoes the specific character of this space, transforming it into a fictional “private home”. With the cooperation of a team of engineers and an art production team, the complicated smart-home system “IF” was installed.

Guided by the sound of “IF”, the audience will pass through the hallway, bathroom, living room and bedroom as if going through the chapters of the story. The objects in the exhibition are deployed like actors in a theatre, and automatically “perform” corresponding to the choices the audience makes. In this project, the audience members are not just passive viewers, but also the participants in the plot. Due to the different choice options, the narrative constantly varies as will invariably the ending as well.

This “private home” thus becomes a carrier of the imagination. Amidst all of this, dwelling and self-imprisonment, life and its setbacks, and all the emotions and desires of contemporary urban people are projected in this installment.
