After WWII, with the process of “de-Japanification” and “Chinization”, the “Formosa before WWII” had become a mysterious Utopia with indescribable exotic atmosphere, how we deal with the cultural trace left by the colonialist has also become a serious issue. This project’s stress falls on the geishas in Xinbeitou, where was famous for hots pring in Taipei. Those Japanese women, who went through Asia before WWII also had a name called “Miss Karayuki”, their footprint witnessed the expansion of the empire but finally hidden deep inside history and became the homeless phantom haunted in this island.

Taking it as a wedge, in this project: Four seasons of Yoshiyama and Niitaka, the artist mixed old Formosan historical video and ukiyo-e of flower street together to show such mix-blood atmosphere and discussed the land memory in Xinbeitou where is the place used to be famous for luxury Japanese style hotel with geisha residency, the legend of Kamikase and secret house prisoned the Chinese Young Marshal, Zhang, Xue-liang that those three lines interweaved the reflection of Taiwan modern history.
