Being Or Not Being is a two-channel video while the two holographic films are projected on the two walls at the same corner for that viewers will not have to face both films right after they step inside the exhibition space. Instead, viewers will see one film first and notice the ridiculous and absurd details of the film and the character. They may have their own interpretation at this point, but when they walk toward the corner and see the other film, the juxtaposition of the two reveals that the conversations in the two films actually take place in the same situation. In other words, I divide one exact reality, the real scene being filmed, into two “image realities.” The characters in the separated films continue the conversation. In the beginning of the video, two films simultaneously progress (the conversation is completely lapped with each other), but one film is one second longer than the other. After one whole day, it creates a huge lag between the two films as well as the conversations in the two films as a response to my original concept of “self-communication.”

In this work, I filmed the conversation between the two people without letting them know, and I removed the image of one person from the film in post-production on my computer, so the final work shows only one person talking to the air. I chose to hide my camera without notifying them because I wanted a natural conversation instead of any implication of acting and role-playing. It is through such a conversation that the ultimate concept of “self-communication” can be revealed. The intentional one –second difference in the duration of the two films transforms the responsive conversation into a state of self-murmur, suggesting that we are speaking to no one but ourselves when we have a conversation.
