“Settlement?“ primarily is the aim of giving the viewers a space of imagination. An imagination built between physical living space and some phenomenal chores daily life. In the moving image, I would like to invite the viewers to gaze the movements which happen quietly in our ordinary daily life with a close-up viewpoint. I was inspired by the concept of “house” in a book called The Poetics of Space written by Gaston Bachelard. He said “I should say: the house shelters day-dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.” I started to plan to make a film about a space/house/home. There is no relation to my original home/family in the space I filmed in my work. This was a flat I rent in Edinburgh as I am studying in UK. This is a space of home/non-home- a paradoxical space and thinking between intimate security and strange isolation. This rental flat offered me a sort of Illusionary suspension. This could be seen as a miniature of being under a foreign sky. A status could be describe this situation: being insecure mentally but having a physical comfortable place to stay. After moving into this flat, I started to make a work for it. Through the filming, I tried to project my self-identity to fill in the gap of the ambiguity. Adding my own memory, this place could be transferred into my own “settlement”. The close-up viewpoint also coincides the sort of paradox-making the viewers see the images with a so close but so far feelings. The close-up viewpoint forces the viewers to gaze the texture of the objects but the close-up reduces the recognition of the objects-the viewers get lost when they want to find out what are they seeing. This sort of uncertainty coincides the sense of insecure of temporal rent. With the singular way of seeing, I also want to quote a sentence of a scholar “Where you are is where your identity is; that's your place, your home and your being now.” as the further reference of this work.
