For an individual, how to embody the environment of a city where he/she grows up? While staying in the city, how to sketch the external outline that covers us? The most direct way is recording. Another way is relatively abstract, i.e. the sum of individual’s current and past perceptual experiences. The former uses “event” as a fragmentary-memory-style measurement unit while the latter is a continuation and accumulation of block-like perception of memory. It’s quite satiric that present-day living context indeed develops as per the route and direction depicted by Susan Sontag in 1977 and even becomes more thorough: our comprehension or perception of things and environment looks as if we visualize or frame all things and then consider them as an equivalent of experience. Actually, two outlining methods mentioned above should be interpenetrated and integrated with each other; however, a clear line has been drawn between them.

The two pieces of works published by the author-“Travel in the lens” and “The Mist”-respectively focuses on and starts from “frame” and “perception”. “Travel in the lens” attempts to directly lead viewers to have “travel” experience in the frame world by offering information outside “frame”, thus to highlight contradictory relationship between “image in front of viewer” and “viewer’s actual experience”. “The Mist” places together and compares two images of mountain mist that look the same. However, one image shows an obvious dynamic state of bird’s flying over but the other has no dynamic element and looks like a static photo; therefore, the viewer makes such a preliminary judgment in terms of perception of time. Actually, a kind of obscure time flowing that can’t be seen by our eyes but can be captured by our body is quietly operating in the latter image (slow movement of mountain mist and flow of background air). Consequently, after the viewer spends more time in viewing, the obscure and abstract sense of time will gradually become clear due to initiation of our more fine perception.
