“...There was a blast of heat pushed us into the sky.” - Vapor Equilibrium
Following the threats from studying cloud, “Insentient Multitude Sentient Assemblage” shifts the focus from vapor to heat. The “heat” not only implies physical thermal that produced from global industrial production or natural energy, but also suggests a compound of dynamism, like humans desire, capital flow, agency of the object, and etc. The strategy of combining and juxtaposing different qualities of the personal sense of “heat” is quite similar from the methods adopted in that past projects. This kind of SF (science fiction/speculative fabulation) structure approaches and constructs reality simultaneously with authenticity and absurdity. This work imagine a SF scenery, in which things are melted and tangled with each other. The exhibition is presented as a sort of environment absorb the heat in and reterritorilize, in which things enact new interactions with others. And in the title, “Sentient” implies human’s applications on the things that being categorized as insentient.
The work contains few kinetic and electronic sculptures. The plants monitoring light sculptures combine several materials together. Printed/clear plexiglass and PVC pipes are heat-transformed into shapes that implied forces from both external and internal. These irregular shaped elements sit on each other and are fixed with stainless handlebar. The changes of electrical resistance of the plants are monitored and then transcoded to light signals in real time. And these lights are placed right next to the plants so that them somehow stimulate the plants and create a feedback loop of light and life. Three kinetic sculptures are shaking and slowly moving on the floor like some kind of creatures. They are made out of silicone rubber which casted from artist’s own fingers.
