Walter Benjamin one mentioned in a letter that when he was examining his own written drafts, he was surprised to find that they were comprised mostly of quotations. He writes: this is the most outrageous form of mosaic technique that one can imagine. To me, this is a kind of metaphorical thought on the weltbildes (world picture, or conceptions du monde). It implies that this world as idea is comprised of different meaning fragments from different times and spaces and these fragments must rely on a human vision to discern and combine. This is the concept of dialectic image (dialektische bilder) that Benjamin gained from Louis Aragon's novel, which was written because of the demolition of the Covered Passages of Paris. In this exhibition, I hope to re-experience the purity and simplicity in the act of artistic creation. I'm not really planning anything, however, everything in this world ultimately has a meaning for its existence.
An artist, long trained in sensibility, cannot create an "arrangement of isolated parts" that references nothing. Thus, the depth of art comes from my freely choosing "isolated parts" to "arrange" and what unintended, "non-autonomous" meanings get drawn out. What I'm thinking of is Kurt Schwitters' (1887-1948) concept of primitive installation. Thus, this exhibition takes my personal experience with visual meaning and returns it back to the "essence" of visible objects, in expectancy of some possible forms of "sense."
