Upon living in New York, Peng became interested in exploring Western religious scriptures for his Canine Monk series. He was first struck by their monotheism, which sharply contrasts the plurality of gods in many Eastern religions. In this video, the texts are excerpts from the Bible, which contain words like teaching, tongue, lips, praise, food, dog, revenge, death and blood. Phrases such as “Let us make man in our image, after our likeness” and “For there is not a word in my tongue” dislodge these otherwise proverbial texts, making both the teaching and the taught subjects—that these texts always imply—deeply ambiguous positions.
