The birth or gather of a market originates from the need of people, such as the need for eating, drinking, wearing, using, playing…
The market place in Taiwan has an alluring atmosphere. The reason of its enchantment comes from the dirtiness, the darkness, the chaos, the humidity, the smell, and the sounds of peddle playing about day after day like an orchestra’s symphony. When encountering those street vendors that have been running for decades, one can sense the passing of time in every stand and corner: loads of objects, paper boxes, polystyrenes, baskets, posters, calendars, light bulbs, and the wall covered by loads of phone numbers and peeling tiles…
In the beginning, I was fascinated by the special color and atmosphere. Later, I tried to find exciting elements or various combinations of conflicts and contradictions that exists within the place: such as the surrealistic lighting and the space and decoration of the whole stand that somehow seems messy and tidy simultaneously. I wanted to explore the tracks left over, where consumption and the need of human beings have been fulfilled in the end of the day.
The characteristics of the owner basically has a close connection with the decoration and setting of the street stand. Therefor, the whole market could be seen as decorative art. All of the above intertwines together, creating the uniqueness of Taiwanese market and one of the most authentic aesthetics of Taiwan.
