Military dependents’ villages are a common part of the nation’s heritage in the history of anti-communism in Taiwan. They continue to preserve the memories of both the army and the nation itself. This video was created in one particular villages, yet it also serves to reflect on other villages which have gone through a similar process of memory reproduction.
Chao aims to discover the village’s identity, to preserve its old buildings, and to recreate daily scenes of the past. By using read-mades and site-specific installations coupled with sounds, the artist attempts to summon the audiences’ own memories, while inviting everyone to become re-immersed in this period of history.
