VHS (videotape) became popular among families as an easy-shooting tool roughly between 1980s and 1990s during which current young new media artists were still in their childhood. Time and family memories were stored in rolls of film and became static and permanent. Yet, is there any chance that these time and memories can be detached from their original contexts and become live performance as a kind of new media after being recreated?
So I take the advantage of the mechanical properties of VHS player, letting my hands or even my wrists touch the internal magnetic read heads that further allow my heartbeats and gasps during performance to create visual and sonic interferes. Opening the top cover of the VHS player to clean the tape heads for removing image noises has been the experience I gained since childhood, which inspired me to get started in video-making. However, the screen noises resulted from the damaged videos caused by physical interferences allow the past to overlap the present, bringing the audience a strong visual impact through projection space and noises.
