Kuo Yu-Ping was born in Taiwan and she received her MFA in trans-disciplinary arts from Taipei National University of Arts.

Her currently practice deals with the relationship between personal experiences and history. Using video, installation and painting, she illustrates the ways in which modernity is considered a concept of progress, but in its rise to dominance creates various remnants and legacies as it rewrites traumas. Her works penetrate tribe and nation, exploring realism in the collective consciousness, and the relationship between society, politics and the economy. On another level, she transforms art into a poetic narrative body that is a form of life in it of itself.

Her recent major works — Delay and Pit, Eastern Messiah, and Autonomy — concentrate on the depiction of trauma in the process of life. Drawing from personal experience and her family history, she investigates Eastern Asian’s acute sense of “lack” in their collective consciousness that has developed due to contemporary historical circumstances.

The strain of her inner life has been thoroughly expressed through her eerie and mystical paintings.

Kuo currently lives and works in Taipei.

Goose
In the work "Goose", the artist simulated a pseudo-history of the species “goose.” She constructed a monument on which stands a statue of goose. Then she attached two light-salmon-colored and wax-made columns to the body of the goose statue. Organs of female sexuality carved in relief covers the two wax columns. Accompanying this statue, the artist selected various images derived from entering the term “goose” to the Internet search engine. The contents of these images include daily streetsca ...

Gift
In the work "Gift", the artist treated the families of public servants as the object of survey, while her parents are also public servants. These families can be regarded as the bourgeoisie in terms of economy. However, they lack the capability for comprehending symbols. The artist collected various objects such as ornaments and souvenirs from these families, and interviewed the owners of these objects about their attachments and memories. Together with the detailed sketches of these objects, ...

Punto Diablos
The work "Punto Diablos" documented a headland at the north coast of Taiwan (now known as Yehliu) with images. There were a number of settlements supported by small-scale capture fisheries, which began to decline after Taiwan was incorporated into the labor-division system of global production. Thanks to its unique geomorphological features, Yehliu has become a tourist attraction since the 1960s. In the 1970s, the government built a nuclear power plant there. Nowadays, Yehliu is transfo ...
