Taiwanese artist CHAO Shu-Jung takes her inspiration from the neighborhoods and localities she visits in Japan. Intensely aware of the memories and history that linger in city streets, Shu-Jung roams through these places, carefully forming an image that she will later give form to.

During her residence, the artist collects a range of materials, some inadvertently, some as presents. The found objects that make their way to Shu-Jung are used largely as they are, with limited change made to what they might have been originally. Instead, they are given artistic purpose through their arrangement, projection and other new media. Sounds and voices that inhabit the place are recorded and woven by the artist into a final installation piece showcasing the unique character of its setting.Through the artwork, curious visitors will find themselves caught up in a crossover between the history of Shoo-cho, and the time that Shu-Jung spent there on her residency. The overall experience allows for complete immersion into a space designed to give new awareness of its original existence. That is, the artwork doesn’t exist as a separate element of the room it inhabits: rather, the two work together to create an original “site-specific” exhibit that is acutely aware of its context.

While her time in Shoo-cho (Okayama, Japan) has been short, one has to only look at Shu-Jung’s final artwork to see that her residence in the town has left a deep impression. The piece rings with her thoughts and feelings about the area and there is no mistaking that the experience will stay with Shu-Jung to Taiwan and beyond.
