People have a human instinct for natural omen, we want to foresee the future thought the interaction with nature. During my residency in Seoul, I fortuitously saw a tour ad of Baekdam Valley in subway — hundreds of taller than human stone-pile being stacked on the riverbed for wishing luck, people rise it so high as if it goes higher more fortune they will get.

Nobody knows how this ritual began, I guess it may be the breathtaking process of stacking make people regarded it was “lucky”. But how I saw it was a geometry problem; therefore, I try to calculate the fortune of these stone-pile by analyzing the geometry. I 3D-scanned these stone-pile, then unfold the model into a map of triangles, measured and calculated the average shape of all. And compared it with an equilateral triangle, to see how far the central of the average triangle away from an equilateral triangle’s. After that, I build up this triangle map to a paper craft.

The tediously measuring and calculating procedure become my own ritual. Even the final number compared with stone-piled seems to make no sense, (just like everything recognized as the symbol of luck.) The mysterious but spectacular of nature and the clear but inconspicuous of mathematics, both are believable and unbelievable, depends on one's obsession.

In the other hand, I try to find some reachable material to provoke my feeling about these stone-pile after I back to Taiwan. The stone in the Baekdam Valley are mostly marble or granite, which are commonly used as floor brick in Taiwan. I broke few granite brick, then trimmed the debris to the closest shape of triangle, it become another random modeling object that fix the context. And looks like a miniature mountain by using its as paperweight.
